To those unfamiliar with the diversity of the blues, the music of Catfish Hodge may be a bit confusing because it doesn’t fall into the genre’s traditional interpretations. On his latest release, Hodge does not wallow in self-pity over the harsh realities of human existence. Instead, he wholeheartedly celebrates life. Whether through humorous lyrics, upbeat tempos or the underlying positivity of his music, Hodge’s lightheartedness is undeniably infectious. Like a Big Dog Barkin’ is an enjoyable 10-song collection reflecting influences of jazz, zydeco and even Motown (Hodge was raised in Detroit) as well as what is usually defined as the blues.
